Why Kansas City ducts load up with dust

Most of it comes from the return side. Panned joist and stud-cavity returns are common here. Those cavities are raw wood and sheet metal. They pull air past rim joists, laundry areas, and basement framing. Lint and drywall dust ride along. So does insulation fiber. Ragweed and tree pollen settle in return drops every fall. Finishing a basement sends gypsum dust everywhere for weeks.

Supply side fails differently. Attic flex sags between joists and collects dust in the low spots. Kinks at the takeoff choke airflow. Torn vapor jackets sweat in July humidity, and damp dust turns to mud at the register boot. Fiberglass ductboard plenums from 1960s–80s installs hold moisture in the fiber face. That is where microbial growth shows up, usually near the coil.

A real cleaning is negative-pressure vacuum plus agitation, boot by boot. Registers come off. Trunk lines get access ports cut and sealed. Converted gravity-furnace octopus trunks take longer because the plenums are oversized.

Cleaning will not fix an undersized return in a 1950s ranch. Whistling registers and high static pressure are a sizing problem. We will say so rather than vacuum and leave. Crushed branches above finished basement ceilings need repair, not suction.
