Air Duct Cleaning FAQ — Kansas City, MO
Common questions from homeowners in Kansas City and the surrounding area. If your question isn't here, call us and we'll give you a straight answer.
Is there a real interval for duct cleaning, or is that just a sales line?
Most Kansas City homes land somewhere in the three to five year range, and plenty of them need it sooner. The reason is the pollen calendar here: oak, maple, cedar and cottonwood in spring, grass through summer, then ragweed coming off the row-crop and prairie ground southeast of town. Add roughly five months of heavy cooling from late May through September and five months of heating from November through March, and your blower is pulling that load through the same ducts almost year-round. If you have pets, recent remodeling dust, or a return that's undersized for the system, cut the interval short.

What does the crew actually do once they're inside the house?
We start at the air handler and work outward, because cleaning branches into a dirty trunk just moves the problem around. A negative-air machine gets hooked to the main, then every supply and return gets agitated with rotating brushes or compressed-air whips so the debris has somewhere to go. Registers come off and get washed, the blower compartment and coil face get checked, and we look at the return drops where most of the buildup hides. At the end we show you the before and after at the access points so you aren't taking our word for it.

How many hours should I block off?
A standard postwar ranch with basement sheet metal mains and one system usually runs two to four hours. A 1920s bungalow or foursquare with gravity-furnace trunks converted to forced air takes longer, because those old galvanized runs are oversized and often have abandoned branches nobody capped. Two-story subdivision homes with zoned systems mean two air handlers and two full setups, so plan on most of a day. We give you a time estimate before we start and tell you if something in the ductwork changes it.

Why do two houses on the same street get different numbers?
Register count is the biggest driver. A split-level with twenty-plus supplies and two returns has more connection points than a small frame house near the urban core. After that it's system count, since zoned two-story homes in the outer-ring subdivisions mean doing the whole process twice. Access matters too: flex duct buried in a vented attic in August, or a sealed chase with no service opening, takes more work than open basement trunk-and-branch you can walk right up to. Condition counts as well, because ducts that have never been cleaned since a 1960s install need more passes than ones done five years ago. We look at all of it on site and give you the number in writing before anyone touches a tool.

Will you be shoving my furniture around and leaving dust everywhere?
We need about three feet of clearance at each register and a path to the furnace. Light items we move and put back; heavy pieces, antiques and anything on a wall mount we'd rather you handle or we'll work around. Drop cloths go down at the equipment, hoses get sleeved where they cross flooring, and the vacuum runs under negative pressure so debris leaves the house instead of landing in the living room. Basements get swept before we pack up.

My air seems off and the laundry takes forever. Which system is the culprit?
Separate the symptoms. Clothes needing two cycles, a hot dryer cabinet, lint collecting around the door seal, or a damp laundry room points at the dryer vent, and that's its own run to the exterior. Weak airflow at certain registers, dust settling a day after you wipe, uneven temperatures between floors, or a musty smell when the system kicks on points at the HVAC ducts. Long dryer runs through a finished basement ceiling are common in the 1950s to 70s ranch belt here and they clog quietly. We can inspect both on one visit and tell you which one is actually costing you.

What happens if there's mold in the ductwork?
We stop and show it to you. Summer dew points in the upper 60s to 70s mean humid air hitting cool metal, so growth near the coil, the plenum, or on insulated runs in an unconditioned attic is something we see here. Surface growth on hard metal we can clean and treat with an EPA-registered product. Growth on porous duct liner or fiberglass board is different, because the material has to come out rather than be scrubbed, and widespread contamination belongs with a licensed remediation contractor. We'll also point at the cause, usually a condensate problem, a leaking duct pulling humid basement air, or a coil that stays wet.

Does a fresh filter go in before you leave?
Yes. Putting the old filter back into a clean system defeats the point, so a new one goes in as part of the job on standard sizes. We stock common filters for Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Goodman, Rheem and American Standard equipment. Oversized media cabinets and some odd-depth housings we may have to order, and we'll tell you that at the estimate instead of after. We also check whether the filter rating is choking an undersized return, which is a frequent issue in older homes near the core.

Can anyone get out here today?
Often, yes. We hold slots open each day for same-day calls, and mornings book up faster than afternoons. Spring pollen season and the first hard cold snap in November are our busiest stretches, so call early on those weeks. If we can't reach you today we'll give you a real window, not a vague promise, and estimates are free either way.

Where in the metro do you work?
Kansas City, Missouri and the surrounding metro. That covers the bluff neighborhoods north of the river, the 1920s to 40s bungalow and foursquare belts, the postwar ranch and split-level areas south and east on the loess and clay soils, and the newer subdivisions on the outer ring. We also take calls in the smaller towns outside the metro, where crawlspace duct shows up more often than the full basements that are standard in the city. If you're not sure whether your address is in range, call and ask.
