Does sanitizing actually fix a duct odor?

Only if the debris comes out first. Sanitizer sprayed onto mud-caked dust at a register boot does nothing. It coats the dust. The dust stays. Cleaning comes first, chemistry second. Some jobs never need the chemistry at all. Fiberglass ductboard plenums from 1960s-80s installs are the real exception. Microbial growth gets into the fiber mat. You cannot scrub that surface like sheet metal.

Where the growth starts matters more than what we spray. Kansas City summers push humid air across cold supply runs. Uninsulated galvanized trunks in basements sweat. Attic flex with a torn vapor jacket sweats inside the jacket, out of sight. Damp fiberglass plus settled pollen is the recipe. Fix the condensation source or the odor returns next August.

Panned joist and stud-cavity returns are a separate problem. They are not sealed duct. They are framing cavities pulling basement air, laundry lint, and whatever sits in the rim joist. Fogging a cavity like that does nothing real.

We use EPA-registered products rated for HVAC surfaces, applied by hand or controlled fog, never poured in. If your plenum board is saturated or delaminating, replacement beats sanitizing, and we will say so.
