Air Duct Cleaning in Kansas City, MO

Why Kansas City ducts load the way they do
Most of it starts with a furnace swap. Gravity systems moved warm air slowly, so the trunks were built huge. Later someone bolted a blower onto that same ductwork. Now fast air meets an oversized galvanized plenum, drops its load, and leaves it there. Joist-cavity returns make it worse. Those are just framing bays with a panel over them. They pull wood dust, old insulation fiber, and foundation grit straight into the system.
The metro has a wide range of housing stock, and each era fails differently. Pre-1900 and 1920s brick and frame in the urban core and historic districts hide decades in original trunk lines and knob-era register boots. Bungalows and foursquares from the 1920s through the 40s run narrow basement mains with floor registers, and floor registers collect everything the house drops. Ranch tracts from the 1950s to 70s in south KC and the Northland are mostly intact sheet metal. Far south and north of the river, flex duct sags and the inner liner tears at the collars.
Outside air adds to it. Ragweed and cottonwood season, river-valley humidity, bluff-side pockets, and rail and traffic particulate near the industrial bottoms.
Finished a basement recently? Check a supply register with a flashlight. Drywall dust gets everywhere, and it is the most common reason we get called.

Frequently Asked Questions
My house is from the 1910s and still has the old gravity furnace trunks in the basement. Can those even be cleaned?
Yes, and they're usually the ducts that need it most. A lot of urban core and historic district homes had a gravity furnace converted to forced air at some point, so you're left with oversized galvanized trunks and a big plenum that were never sized for the velocity a modern blower puts out. Dust settles in the flat bottom of those trunks and sits there, sometimes for decades. We open access points on the trunk, pull from the register boots, and work the mains section by section. The knob-era boots under floor registers are often the dirtiest single spot in the house. Older sheet metal needs a careful hand. Seams can be brittle, and joints are sometimes just gapped and taped from an old retrofit, so we check and reseal where we open.
We just finished our basement and now there's a fine grit on everything. Is that coming from the ducts?
Almost certainly. This is one of the most common calls we get in Kansas City. Finished-basement remodels mean drywall sanding happening right next to open supply runs, and if the system ran at all during the work, that dust got pulled in and pushed through every supply in the house. Gypsum dust is fine and light, so it travels the full length of the duct and keeps resettling for months. If you're in a 1920s bungalow or foursquare with narrow basement mains, it packs into those tighter runs and the floor registers especially. Cleaning the whole supply side, plus the plenum and blower compartment, is what actually stops the recurring film.
How fast can you get someone out here?
We cover the city from the Northland down through south KC, so scheduling depends more on where you are and the time of year than anything else. Most homes get an appointment within a few days. Spring ragweed and cottonwood season and the fall heating startup are our two busiest stretches, and those weeks book out further. If you're calling because of a remodel or because you just bought a place and want it done before you move in, tell us. Those are usually flexible on timing and we can fit them around the urgent calls.
Do you ever do same-day work?
Sometimes, usually from a cancellation. Call and ask rather than assuming. One thing that affects it: a 1950s or 60s ranch in the south part of town or north of the river with a straightforward basement main and a known register count is a job we can slot into a short window. A century-old home in a historic district where nobody knows how many runs there are, whether there are joist-cavity returns, or what the old trunk layout looks like is harder to commit to on short notice, because the scope can change once we're in the basement. We'd rather schedule that one properly than rush it.
What makes one Kansas City quote higher than another?
Housing era, mostly. This city has about the widest spread in the metro, and that's reflected in the work. A newer flex-duct system in far south KC or north of the river is quick, with accessible runs and a predictable layout. A pre-1900 or 1920s home with converted gravity trunks, a large galvanized plenum, and joist-cavity returns takes substantially longer, because joist returns are raw framing rather than sheet metal and the original trunks may hold decades of accumulation that doesn't come out in one pass. Register count matters too; older homes with floor registers in every room add up. If you're near the industrial bottoms or the rail corridors, the particulate load tends to be heavier, which can mean more time on the return side. We'd rather walk your basement and see what's actually down there before putting a number on it.

What happens after you call us
Call and tell us the age of the house and how many furnaces run it. We give you a two hour arrival window and the name of the tech coming to you.
We walk the basement or attic runs, count supply and return drops, and hand you a firm quote. Trunk size and register count drive the number, not square footage.
We seal the system, pull the lines, test airflow at each register, and vacuum up behind ourselves. You pay the quoted number, nothing added.
